Lucky Devils
Los Angeles (Hollywood), CA / Completed 2006
Prototype: Located in an existing storefront building on Hollywood Boulevard, this 2,000 prototype for a new, organic, “fast casual” restaurant, contributes to the resurgence of this iconic district. The target patrons of this restaurant are local business people, tourists, and late night club hoppers who desire high quality hamburgers and hot dogs in a stimulating, authentic environment.
Simple layout: The project utilizes a simple layout that includes a main eating area on one side of a central banquette and a high eating and drinking counter on the other. Between the high counter and a wall covered by a blurred image of car traffic at night, people queue up to order takeout food.
Diverse Material Palette: To create an environment that is both warm and dynamic , the project utilizes a range of materials and colors that come from high and low culture, the past and the present – some warm, some cold; some hard, some soft. These include terrazzo, concrete, walnut, vinyl, wallpaper, stainless steel, aluminum, acrylic, and various types of glass. To reference the restaurant’s name, flame-colored hues are emphasized, but mixed with a variety of supporting and contrasting tones.
Graphics and Media: To entertain the lone lunch eater or the bored blind date, a variety of flat screen TV’s are located in the space – three in the aluminum “media boxes” and one in a graphic “traffic wall” generated from a nighttime photograph of an LA freeway. This wall also houses a custom-designed acrylic flower vase locked in a steel box. At its base, a terrazzo floor spells out a fragment of the restaurant’s name.
Burning Ceiling: The signature element in the project is its ceiling, which is articulated with a number of light slots and three ‘boxes” which fold down into the main dining space. Out of these boxes come “flames” of light that animate the ceiling and contribute to the identity and branding of this new venture.
