c. JFAK, 2020
We sat down with Derek, who has been with JFAK for almost a decade now.
How long have you been at JFAK?
9 years, though you may want to check the RFP responses that we’ve sent out for consistency. They may say I’ve been at JFAK for 10 years. They’ve been rounding up…
What is your favorite project to have worked on to date at JFAK, and why?
Roberts Pavilion at Claremont McKenna College. It was the first project on which I worked actively through all project phases, from schematic design through construction administration. In particular, I learned a lot performing construction administration on RP and it’s made me more confident in handling the CA for my other projects.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m working on the design of the new Studio Classroom Building at Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences, Hudson Housing in Hollywood, Spaulding Housing in West Hollywood, and a new Navigation Center for the City of Palmdale – the main component of which is a food bank called SAVES.
Who, architecturally, are you inspired by?
Steven Holl.
Where is your favorite lunch spot?
Korean BBQ House in Little Tokyo.
Do you Work from Home (WFH) or work from the office?
WFH for the most part, but I started recently to come into the office at least once a week.
Tell us something random about you!
I am in a race against my friends to be the first to visit all 7 continents. I have 3 left and once the pandemic ends, I can continue my journey to win.
